Article 12 – Freedom of Occupation

(1) All Germans have the right to freely choose their occupation, place of work, and place of training. The practice of an occupation may be regulated by or pursuant to a law.
(2) No one may be compelled to perform a specific work, except within the framework of a traditional general public service obligation that applies equally to all.
(3) Forced labor is permissible only in the case of a deprivation of liberty ordered by a court.
